Paul Clark, County Executive, Marcus Henry, Director of Community Services and Councilman John Cartier attended. Mr. Clark was kind enough to say a few words encouraging the Friends of Rockwood to continue doing such great work and thanking us for being such a dedicated group of volunteers.
The meeting lasted for an hour and everyone adjourned to the south lawn for a picnic. It was a great success. We had music by The Craig Satchell experience. They played some geat jazz and Dixieland which had everyone tapping their toes and swaying to the gentle rhythm of the beat. The children had their faces painted; we played badminton and croquet on the lawn and, of course, ate ice cream. It was much like the old days and Rockwood came alive once again. The ice cream was provided by Hy-Point Dairy who was the original ice cream provider of yesteryear and it was delicious.

The lecture for the evening was “Bringing History to Light,” about the Rockwood archives at the University of Delaware. Guest speaker Matt Davis is the graduate student who is researching and organizing the collection. He is a Ph. D. candidate, having already received at B.A. in History from Susquehanna University and a M.A. at the U.of D. He has received the John Sweeney Fellowship Fund for 2009-2010. Introductory remarks made by Rebecca Johnson Melvin, librarian of special collections.

Guest speaker Rep. John Cartier on "The Philadelphia Pike as a Scenic and Historic Byway." There was a brief meeting, lecture, followed by refreshments.
John Cartier's presentation commenorated the county funded community based effort to have the state designate the Philadelphia Pike as a scenic and historic byway. The images capture the historical buildings and communities that line the pathway from the Brandywine River to the Pennsylvania state line.
It is a celebration of these communities today as well as reptrospective of their historical development in the vicinity of the Philadelphia Pike. He intends to revisit the scenic and historic byway issue in the near future and this presentation is an effective tool to keep the issue active in the Eastern Brandywine Hundred communities.
Councilman John Cartier represents the 8th New Castle County Council District which is composed of the eastern Brandywine Hundred suburban communities. He was elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. He is associated with Gears Mechanical Co. as a designer and in commercial and residential sales. John and his wife Dr Lindsey Slater, live in a historic home in Holly Oak. John is on the Friends of Rockwood Board.
